Frequently asked questions
Introduction
What do you do?
I help people overcome the anxieties and creative challenges of public speaking. This means any kind of pitch, presentation, meeting, sales report, technical update, job interview, wedding speech, eulogy, lecture, seminar, or other type of meeting or presentation you might encounter in your work or personal life.
I will help you write, develop, and organize the words and visual material you need to effectively express your thoughts and ideas. I will help you practice and feel good about what you’re doing. I’ll teach you a method that will allow you to say what you want to say clearly and effectively—without wasting time or being paralyzed by anxiety.
Who are you—and what makes you an expert?
I’m a former journalist, author of several books, and formerly terrible public speaker who discovered the (somewhat) lost art of speech training and fell in love with it. The ancient Greeks and Romans taught speech as an integral part of higher education; they felt that educated people and citizens in democracies need to be able share ideas and make group decisions.
I didn’t invent anything, I simply spent a few years figuring out how to explain the teachings of Aristotle and Cicero (the two greatest speech teachers in history) for modern people. When I realized the degree to which modern people needlessly suffer from anxiety about public speaking (because they’ve never been taught how to do it) I decided to become the world’s best teacher, using these ancient techniques.
How do we start working together? Can we talk first to figure out what I need?
Yes. Send me an email or use my calendar to schedule a free 20-minute Zoom meeting to discuss your goals. If you want to improve your general speaking skills, or those of your company, great. If you have an upcoming meeting, pitch, speech, presentation, or report you want to prepare for, also great. Either way, you’ll walk away with a template for speech preparation that you can use forever.
If we agree to work together, you will pay me a deposit. We’ll schedule our initial session (s). You’ll share any documents or other materials pertaining to your project. I’ll review your material and make notes.
The first two sessions usually run on the longer side (60 to 90 minutes), because there’s lots to absorb. We’ll work—separately, and together—on rewriting your speech or presentation. You’ll practice your speech—first on your own, then with me. Later sessions tend to be shorter (15 to 30 minutes) and focus on fine-tuning problem areas.
Sessions can always be arranged for emergencies and last-minute crises.
How much time does it take to become a good speaker?
This depends on the length of your presentation; the degree of writing (or rewriting) it requires; and the amount of work you do on your own.
My experience is that few people need or want to become wildly eloquent orators. They simply want to be okay, not-terrible. They want to feel comfortable expressing their thoughts. I find that most people with, for example, 15- to 30- minute presentations can get pretty decent with 5-6 hours of training. Even 2-3 hours can profoundly change your approach to public speaking and put you on a firmer, less anxious path.
I can promise that everyone I’ve ever worked with has gotten far more comfortable with public speaking.
Services
Can you create a custom public speaking workshop for my company or team?
Yes. This is a great way to work. I start by interviewing members of your team to get a sense of their daily and weekly challenges. I custom designed my workshops to focus on solving your particular, real problems, rather than teaching great public speaking techniques. The institutional knowledge we establish together will allow your team to evaluate one another and carry the training forward after our work is finished.
Do you work with clients remotely?
Yes. I do plenty of remote one-on-one coaching, educational talks, and team training.
Where are you located?
I’m based in New York City, but I’m happy to travel for work, when needed.
What’s the best time of day to work together?
I usually work “normal” hours, from 8:00am-6:00pm EST. If time (or time zones) makes that impossible, I can sometimes schedule sessions on the weekend.
Clients
Do you work with beginners?
Gladly. I work with speakers at all levels. Nothing that I teach is difficult to understand. Whether you’re new to public speaking, or you’re highly accomplished but need to polish an upcoming project, my classical approach to public speaking will radically improve your ability to connect with any audience.
Do you work with children or teens?
I love working with children and teens. Learning to advocate for yourself at a young age instead of being alienated and inarticulate is the most useful, empowering skill of all. The multiplier effect of learning it when you’re young is incalculable.
English is my second language. Is that a problem?
No. What I teach works the same for everybody. If you specifically want help with your accent, I can help— or refer you to specialists in this area. The main emphasis of my teaching is thinking and writing; delivery comes later. If you organize your material and connect with your audience in the proper manner, your accent won’t prevent you from being an effective public speaker.
Process
I’ve always been terrified of public speaking. It provokes sleeplessness, sweaty hands, anguish and panic attacks. How can I overcome such a deep psychological roadblock?
The modern conception is that skill at public speaking depends on reducing anxiety and increasing confidence. If this were true, we’d all be a Xanax or two away from being Oprah or Steve Jobs. The goal is ultimately unrelated to emotions: the goal is to speak well and reach people and explain ourselves well so they get us. Right?
Public speaking is awkward for one reason: because we’ve never been taught how to do it. When we do it poorly and represent ourselves an incompetent and awkward manner, yes, it feels emotional. But the fix isn’t emotional. It’s theoretical and practical. It begins with learning how people listen, then builds from there.
The principles I’ll teach you are very simple. Anyone can learn them. We’ll work together; you’ll practice using these principles a few times. After that, every time you draw on them, you’ll find yourself speaking more clearly, explaining yourself more effectively, and “being yourself” in a way you never would have imagined. In the end, yes, you’ll feel more confident.
Is this at all like therapy?
No (see above). My approach to speech training is based on simple ideas—rooted in the Ancient Greek and Roman art of rhetoric—about the nature of speech and how people listen. Approaching speech from this perspective (thinking about others, instead of thinking about yourself) reduces the cognitive noise in your head by narrowing down your focus. What I will teach you has everything to do with thinking about your audience and nothing to do with your childhood, brain chemicals, or emotional state.
Is our work confidential?
Any information you share with me stays between us. I’m also happy to sign an NDA.
Are you available for fine-tuning and questions in between sessions?
Yes. After two (or so) initial sessions—much of our work can be done during short sessions, emails, and so on.
Rates
How much does it cost?
1:1 speechwriting, coaching, and consultation costs $600 per hour.
If you’d like to hire me to give your team or company a group educational talk about the art of speech, rates vary from $4500 to $7500.
Interactive team training and workshops cost from $1200 to $3500 per participant, depending on the degree of customization and the degree of one-to-one assistance we build into the workshop.
As always, I operate on a sliding scale (see next question).
I can’t afford your rates, but I know I need to get better at sharing my ideas. Can you reduce your fee? Or: Can I make a group with some friends or co-workers together and split your fee?
I’m always eager to help students, nonprofits, activists, or anyone working for a good cause. Tell me about your goals, and we’ll work something out.
What happens if I have to cancel our session?
There’s no charge for cancellations more than 48 hours in advance. Cancellations between 24 and 48 hours in advance will result in a 50% refund. If you cancel within 24 hours of a session, you’ll have to pay the full rate.
What happens if our session runs longer or shorter than our scheduled time?
Sessions often run longer than our scheduled time. When this happens, we’ll make a note and keep moving. I’ll prorate the minutes according and continue our work.

What can I expect from working with you? What’s my ROI (return on investment)?
My experience is that after 4-6 hours of work, my clients no longer hate public speaking. They no longer suffer the painful regret that follows a bad presentation. Founders report getting a second meeting and/or funding from investors. Job candidates report getting the job. At a minimum, they learn to speak more convincingly and less boringly in pitches, presentations, and meetings. They walk away with a method for speech prep that saves time and stress. Once you know what it feels like to speak well, you won’t go backwards.
I’m interested in working with you. Can I check out your references?
Of course—depending on their availability, and how serious you are about coming on as a client. I’d be happy to connect you via email if you’re interested in hearing more about their experience.
